Mexico detains a member of the 'Tren de Aragua' gang accused of human trafficking

Mexican agents detained on Wednesday in the country's capital a member of the Venezuelan transnational criminal gang 'Tren de Aragua', designated as a terrorist group by the United States, on accusations of criminal activities such as human trafficking and drug dealing. The Mexican Security Cabinet informed in a statement that the detainee, identified as Yorbelis 'N', alias 'La Maracucha', is a foreign national and was arrested in the Cuauhtémoc mayor's office, where she had her operational base through several hotels in the area. Investigators accuse her of criminal activities such as extortion, the collection of 'protection money', drug sales, and recruiting victims for sexual exploitation. The operation against this member of 'Tren de Aragua' began last year, when previous detentions were made within the same criminal group that did the same as 'La Maracucha', who had two arrest warrants for aggravated human trafficking and organized crime. For this reason, agents intensified surveillance patrols and located her in the Buenavista neighborhood, where she was detained by officials from the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), the Attorney General's Office (FGR), the Secretariat of Defense, the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), and the National Guard (GN). The alleged gang member was placed at the disposal of a public prosecutor, who will determine her legal situation. 'With these actions, the institutions of the Security Cabinet reaffirm their commitment to working permanently with local authorities to detain those who generate violence and affect the security of the population,' the authorities concluded. 'Tren de Aragua' is a transnational criminal organization originating from Venezuela, considered the most powerful gang in that country, and it carries out murders, extortions, kidnappings, and human trafficking, among other crimes.
